A tank is a container, usually for holding liquids, sometimes for compressed gases. There have been numerous terrible failures of storage tanks. There have been many other accidents caused by tanks since then, often caused by defective welding.If they have been used to hold oil or oil products such as gasoline, the atmosphere in the tanks may be highly explosive as the space fills with hydrocarbons. If new welding operations are started, then sparks can easily ignite the contents, with devastating results for the welders.

In an MFL tool, a magnetic detector is placed between the poles of the magnet to detect the leakage field. Analysts understand the chart recording of the leakage field to identify damaged areas and hopefully to estimate the depth of metal loss.
