Phased Array (PA) ultrasonic is an advanced method of ultrasonic testing that has applications in industrial nondestructive testing. When applied to metals the PA image shows a slice view that may reveal defects hidden inside a structure or weld.
The PA consists of many small ultrasonic elements. The beam is swept like a search-light through the tissue or object being examined, and the data from multiple beams are put together to make a visual image showing a slice through the object. Multiplexing allows fast displacement of ultrasonic beam within probe.
Main benefits of ultrasonic phased arrays
High-speed inspection using single-axis scans instead of conventional raster scan Near-optimal focal length and focal spot for various areas of complex parts or thick components Small, simple probe assembly with multiple beams from a single probe Easy-to-install, low-cost, one-axis scanning systems Better detection in austenitic materials and dissimilar metal (DM) welds Reduced time exposure to radiations Ability to test welds with multiple angles from a single probe Flexible and reduction in the time of performing inspection.
